A Gifted Education Coordinator and Associate Superintendent will share their district's journey to gifted services in high school. They will discuss the gifted program evaluation during 2018-2019 school year that eventually led to a new course being born, "REACH Honors English", based on gifted identification trends. The course creation was inspired by the district's middle school model which offers a Humanities course in place of Social Studies for gifted learners. The presenters will share some amazing data that points to gifted learners achieving at the same rate or better than students participating in a traditional Honors English course. Participants will walk away with strategies and ideas for convincing district leadership that gifted education is not about more content but about providing time for students to take a deep dive into content and practice the skills they have. The district’s gifted high school learners are now seen, heard, and served.
