Three-Act Tasks are investigations in mathematics that are structured in a three-part sequence. In Act 1, learners look at a real-world image or watch a short video clip of a real world situation. They record and discuss what they noticed and questions they have about the situation. Learners work together to formulate a mathematical question based on the stimulus. In Act 2, learners identify all missing information needed to answer the question. This additional information is provided in the form of a second short video clip or image. Learners will then answer their generated question. In Act 3, the full video clip or image is shown with the solution to the math problem included. Throughout each act, connections are made to the eight mathematical practices. Participants will walk away with strategies and examples of how to use three-act tasks with their learners.
