This session focuses on “Brain Jumpstarts,” which are those quick-thinking classroom openers such as Rebus Puzzles, “Odd One Out”, Connections, Lateral Thinking Challenges, and more. While fun and attention-grabbing on the surface, these exercises also build essential skills: abstract reasoning, creative problem-solving, and critical analysis. They offer a perfect on-ramp to standards-based instruction and promote 21st-century skills like flexibility, communication, and intellectual risk-taking.

We will begin with a brief overview of the educational theory behind “priming the brain” and how Brain Jumpstarts tap into core cognitive processes. Then, we’ll explore a wide range of Jumpstart activities, walking through specific examples and showing how they can be adapted across grade levels and subject areas.

During the session, teachers will receive a (FREE!) booklet of “ready-to-use” Brain Jumpstarts, complete with examples, tips for classroom use, and references to academic standards. These materials will help teachers immediately implement ideas covered in the session.
